Subscription retention: 10 ideas that keep subscribers

Most cancellations have a handful of predictable causes. Here's how to address each one.

1. Let subscribers choose what comes next

A subscription that ships the same thing forever eventually feels like a bill. Letting subscribers line up their next deliveries, with a subscription queue, turns it into something they curate and look forward to.

2. Make skipping easier than canceling

"I have too much right now" is one of the most common reasons to cancel. If skipping a delivery takes one click and canceling takes the same, many customers will skip instead, and stay.

3. Offer a pause

Travel, a tight month, or a full cupboard are temporary. A pause with a set restart date keeps the subscriber.

4. Let customers change the date and frequency

A delivery arriving at the wrong time is a reason to leave. Self-service rescheduling and frequency changes fix it without a support ticket.

5. Recover failed payments

Expired and declined cards end subscriptions customers meant to keep. Retry over several days, tell the customer clearly, and give them a secure link to update their card.

6. Ask why, and offer something that fits

When someone starts to cancel, ask for the reason. A customer who finds it too expensive may stay for a discount; one who has too much may prefer a skip. Matching the offer to the reason works better than one generic coupon.

7. Combine deliveries

Customers with several subscriptions on different schedules get several boxes and several shipping charges. Letting them combine onto one date cuts shipping for both of you.

8. Surprise them occasionally

A recommended product, a sample, or a gift with an order gives subscribers something new. Recommendations work best when they're based on what that store's customers actually buy.

9. Make gifting easy

Gift subscriptions reach people who'd never subscribe for themselves, and some recipients become subscribers.

10. Measure churn where it happens

An overall churn rate hides the problem. Break it down by product, plan, and signup month to see which offers keep people and which lose them, then fix those first. Our calculator shows what a one-point drop in churn is worth to your store.
